Fraxel Combination Treatments

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Fraxel is a premium laser treatments for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation.  Unlike conventional laser treatments and chemical peels, Fraxel targets only a percentage of the skin during each treatment, so a deeper, more effective treatment can be delivered safely.  As with most things though, combining different modalities of treatments maximizes the unique positive effects of each one.

Botox can be combined with Fraxel by working on deeper wrinkles, while Fraxel works on skin texture and finer wrinkles.  Deep wrinkles caused by muscles of facial expression can only be improved with Botox and fillers.  Together, Botox and Fraxel are powerful tools in improving facial wrinkles.  They can even both be performed on the same day.

Fraxel and IPL Photofacials may also be combined.  Redness and sunspots are the specialty of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light).  These usually come about from aging and sun damage.  Fraxel is great for smoothing the texture and fine wrinkles in such photo-aged skin but the results are even better when combined with IPL.  These treatments do need to be performed on different days.  Also, IPL Photofacials are restricted to lighter skin tones.

Check out our monthly specials for super deals this month on combination Fraxel treatments.

Botox for Men

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

These days, men want to look younger longer and are considering many options to help them do that.  One such option is Botox.  Botox is well-accepted for smoothing wrinkles arising from facial expression.  Specific muscles can be frozen, such as those that cause frowning or wrinkling of the brow.  The wrinkles treated with Botox generally fade with time.

Men are surprisingly apprehensive when they consider using Botox.  Although some men hold no preconceptions about it, Botox seems to be a “taboo” for many men, as if they were using make-up!  Nothing could be further from reality!  The amazing property of Botox is that it has no permanent side effects and leaves virtually no trace that it had been used, unlike lasers or surgery.  People may not even realize that anything was done at all, just that you look “somehow different.”
However, there are certain pitfalls specific to men when getting Botox.  First, Botox is not for everybody.  If your face is extensively aged and sun-damaged, with very deeply-set wrinkles, they may fade little or not at all.  The original elasticity and plasticity of the skin must still be present to some degree in order for Botox to have any benefit.  Men may be waiting much longer than women before considering Botox, and then it may not be as effective for them.  Botox has the most potential when it is used for mild wrinkles.  Then it can prevent the formation of much deeper wrinkles in the future.

Another pitfall to avoid is droopy eyebrows.  As one’s forehead sags, the eyebrows begin to encroach onto the eyelids.  This forces you to constantly raise your forehead to be able to see.  The eyebrows thus maintain their correct position at the expense of constantly wrinkling the forehead.   If a patient tries to take care of these forehead wrinkles with Botox alone, then the eyebrows may relax, drooping over the eyes.  This unsightly result is something that we take very seriously in preventing at TMD.  We counsel patients who have this potential problem that Botox without a surgical brow lift is probably not a good option for them.

When used in good candidates, whether men or women, Botox can shave many years from one’s appearance and even improve facial expression.  Botox should be approached with realistic expectations and without undue apprehension.

Dysport vs. Botox

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

Until recently, Botox, made by Allergan, was the only formulation of botulinum toxin approved for the treatment of eyebrow lines and wrinkles in the United States.  Dysport is a brand of botulinum toxin made by Ipsen in the United Kingdom.  Dysport is a different formulation of botulinum that is of a different size and different chemical properties.  The recommended amount of botulinum measured in units is different for each brand for treatment of glabellar (between the eyebrows) wrinkles.  At this time, Dysport has also been FDA-approved for this indication.
Also, Dysport is a single-use vial, but a single vial of Botox can be used for different patients.

There are some studies comparing Botox to Dysport.  In the October, 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, both botulinum toxin formulations were compared against each other in a double-blind study looking at efficacy in treatment of glabellar wrinkles.  The recommended amounts of each botulinum toxin were injected in a total of 62 patients.  Results were significantly better for Botox over Dysport at 12 and 16 weeks.  There were no significant differences in adverse effects.  Given these results, it appears that for now, Botox offers a better clinical value and better efficacy over Dysport.

At TMD Medispa, we will continue to monitor clinical research related to botulinum toxin and other cosmetic procedures so that we can provide the best possible service to our patients.

First Botox Party at TMD

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

On June 19, TMD Medi-Spa had its first official Botox party.  Botox was discounted to only $9/unit!  Lots of people came for treatments and to find out more about what TMD offers.  Jeannine, our physician assistant won praise from patients for her technique and gentle touch.  Here are some of the testimonials:

I just had to tell you again how very pleased I am with the Radiesse injections I had yesterday.  I inspected your work again as soon as I got in my car and later in the evening when I got home and I can’t believe what a flawless job you did.  I usually leave the office looking swollen and blotchy but I was good to go the moment I left your office.  You are simply THE BEST!!!!!!!  Thank you so much for taking the time to do the job right.  I’ll see you again in a year or so when I need a touch up. – N. H.

Just wanted to let you know that I saw Jeannine for botox this afternoon.  While I was extremely nervous, she put me at ease and explained everything really well.  She was great!  I am very excited to have been introduced to your clinic.
I actually asked Jeannine about a couple other things and didn’t realize that today there were specials for Juvederm as well.  I am thinking I would love to try that too at some point in the future.  Just wondering if you guys have these “parties” periodically.?.? Hope to meet you next time.  I will definitely be recommending your clinic and Jeannine.  Thanks!!!  – M. B.

What’s the Difference Between Botox and Juvederm?

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

Botox and Juvederm are names that are often heard in discussions of cosmetic dermatology and beauty treatments. What they actually are may be mysterious for some people. This post will try to clarify what they are and what they are used for.

Botox is a chemical derived from bacteria that works by blocking the responsiveness of muscles to nerve impulses. In tiny doses, as in standard medical practice, when botox is injected into facial muscles, it causes them to relax and stop working for an average of 3 months. So, if someone has overactive facial muscles that are causing wrinkles, such as between the eyebrows and around the eyes, Botox can be injected in a pinpoint fashion to relax these. It targets those muscles only, producing a specific and predictable improvement in frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines. Such wrinkles are all caused by overactive muscles that are not necessary for a happy, normal appearance. They can be treated to produce a relaxed, youthful look. Obviously, you would not want to immobilize all the muscles of facial expression, as this would look unnatural. Some muscles in the face are essential for function, such as the lips and eyelids, and these are not typically treated either.

Juvederm is very different from Botox. It is not an active biochemical. Although it is made by bioengineered bacteria, it is consists of hyaluronic acid. This is a structural molecule within the skin that has no chemical activity on nerves or muscles. Juvederm acts by filling a depression in the skin where it is injected. Thus it can be injected under and within wrinkles to make them flatten out and to make them disappear. It can also be injected into lips to make them plumper. Juvederm is FDA-approved to last up to 1 year in the nasolabial folds. It can be used anywhere there are deep wrinkles, such as a very deep furrow between the eyebrows, deep lines around the corners of the mouth, and anywhere else.

Juvederm and Botox are often used together since they work on different aspects of lines and wrinkles. It is common to get Botox for upper face wrinkles, such as crow’s feet and forehead lines and Juvederm for lips or nasolabial folds. At Tattoo MD, a custom solution that addresses your specific needs will be tailored for you. Whether it is for Juvederm, Botox, or tattoo removal, consults are always free! BOTOX LOS ANGELES

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

What should the average consumer make of the recent FDA warning in February about botulinum toxin products, such as BOTOX Cosmetic? At this time, this communique was a warning without any change in prescribing instructions for the products. It noted that there have been some adverse outcomes both in children and adults, with the deaths or serious effects only seen in children. The dose range among adults who had problems, such as weakness in the legs, was 100-700 units. It has not been specified how common these side effects were.

What this means is hard to calibrate since there is no incidence number given. If a million treatments for Botox are given in a year in the U.S. but only handful of cases have some kind of adverse effect, then the chance of the adverse effect is extremely small. Furthermore, the only deaths were in children, and all adults with serious side effects had doses upwards of 100 units. Although 100 units is within the range of a typical Botox treatment, most patients receiving injection for wrinkles receive a lower amount.

For now, we should continue to observe the prescriber cautions and await further notification from the FDA.
